History
Aviator glasses were developed through the military when a need was found for aviators to have glasses that would block the sun but also help clear the view. Bausch and Lomb was put in charge of developing the glasses for the American military. The glasses came out under the Ray-Ban label in 1936 and were, as intended, particularly useful for aviators. A year later, in 1937, Ray-Ban released the design to the public, and the rage began.

A Trend Begins
Aviator sunglasses had been available to the public for several years before they really took off in the fashion world. They started to become very popular when pictures were taken of General Douglas MacArthur as he landed on a beach in the Philippines during World War II. After these pictures, aviator glasses began to rise as a fashion statement. They became even more popular during the 1960s when celebrities and singers, such as Ringo Starr, took to wearing them.

Today, aviator sunglasses can be found in all different formats and for just about everyone, from toddlers to grandparents. They usually have a slightly convex surface and can have either straight arms or arms that curve around the ears.
